Behind the Mic

What Dana Skaggs Taught Me About the Pause Before “Yes”

When the microphones turned off, this is what stayed with me…

Every conversation leaves something behind.

Sometimes it’s a story.

Sometimes it’s a sentence I can’t stop thinking about.

And sometimes it’s a realization that quietly reshapes the way I understand my own work.

My conversation with Dana Skaggs did exactly that.

Dana is known as the “Queen of Boundaries,” and before we recorded, I expected we’d spend our time talking about saying no.

Instead, we spent our time talking about something much deeper.

Why we say yes.

As Dana walked me through her Mental Boardroom framework, I found myself picturing all those different voices we carry inside us. The people-pleaser. The wounded child. The achiever. The protector. The one who’s afraid of disappointing someone. The one who’s convinced everyone else’s needs matter more than our own.

It made me realize something. Most of us already know what healthy choices look like. We know we need better boundaries. We know we shouldn’t overcommit. We know we shouldn’t carry responsibilities that were never ours to begin with.

Knowing isn’t usually the problem.

What fascinated me was what happens next. That tiny moment…the pause between awareness and action. That’s the place I’ve become increasingly curious about through Delay the Binge™.

It’s where life gets hard. It’s where emotions get loud. It’s where old patterns begin pulling us backward. And it’s where we either protect the progress we’ve made…or quietly drift back into familiar habits.

Listening to Dana reinforced something I’ve been discovering through nearly every conversation on this podcast.

Every guest brings a remarkable framework. Every guest offers wisdom that has the power to change lives. What I’m beginning to realize is that Delay the Binge™ isn’t another framework in addition to theirs. It’s becoming the conversation about what happens after inspiration.

How do we actually live what we’ve learned?

How do we sustain healthy boundaries when we’re exhausted?

How do we continue becoming the person we want to be after the conference is over?

How do we remember to pause when the old habits feel easier?

That’s the question I carried with me after Dana and I finished recording.

I don’t think people stumble because they don’t know enough.

I think many of us simply haven’t been taught how to sustain the progress we’ve already made.

And maybe…just maybe…that’s the conversation Delay the Binge™ was always meant to have.

It Takes a Village

One of the greatest gifts of hosting Delay the Binge™ has been discovering that no one is meant to carry this work alone.

Every guest who joins me brings a lifetime of experiences, wisdom, and hard-earned lessons that I don’t possess. Every conversation reminds me that healing, growth, and lasting change happen when we’re willing to learn from one another.

Dana’s message on healthy boundaries is one of those gifts.

She reminded me that protecting our peace isn’t about becoming less compassionate. It’s about becoming more intentional with the life we’ve been entrusted to live.

As I listened to her, I found myself deeply grateful, not only for her willingness to share her story, but for the courage it took to build a life’s work around helping others find freedom.

I’m grateful our paths crossed and that Dana is part of this growing village.

I believe we’re here to strengthen one another. Because one person may help you find hope. Another may help you find courage. Another may help you take the very next step.

Together, we become the village someone else has been praying for.

Dana, thank you for bringing your heart, your wisdom, and your voice to ours. I’m grateful our paths crossed, and I have a feeling this is only the beginning.

With gratitude,

Pam
