Behind the Mic
What If You're Not Failing? What If You're Just Running on Empty?

Yesterday, I shared a story about colorful church rocks, big ideas, and a husband affectionately known as Mr. Bossy.
Looking back, I realize something.
Those years weren't just filled with laughter and unforgettable memories.
They were also filled with moments when I was exhausted.
Moments when I questioned myself.
Moments when I wondered if I was doing enough.
Isn't it interesting how often we believe the loudest voice in our head instead of the truest one?
This week's conversation reminded me that sometimes the person we're hardest on isn't someone else...
It's ourselves.
This Week's Conversation
Early Access: Michelle Puster
Breaking the Cycle of Shame with Self-Compassion
Michelle Puster is a therapist, parent educator, and founder of Compassionate Heart Parenting. But what struck me most wasn't her credentials.
It was her honesty.
She openly shared what it felt like to sit on a bathroom floor after losing patience with her children, convinced she was failing as a mother.
That honesty opened the door to one of the most important conversations we've had on Delay the Binge™.
Because this episode isn't really about parenting.
It's about what happens when shame becomes our inner voice.
Three ideas I haven't stopped thinking about...
1. The pause isn't just for your behavior.
It's for your thoughts.
Before asking...
"Why did I do that?"
Try asking...
"What's really happening inside me?"
Sometimes that single question changes everything.
2. Self-criticism isn't the same as accountability.
Many of us were taught that being harder on ourselves would make us better.
Michelle gently challenges that belief.
Compassion doesn't excuse unhealthy behavior.
It creates the safety needed to actually change it.
3. Small shifts become new patterns.
This may have been my favorite part of our conversation.
Michelle didn't talk about becoming a perfect parent.
She talked about sitting quietly in a parking lot...
Doing something different...
Allowing a new pattern to begin.
That is exactly what Delay the Binge™ has always been about.
Not perfection.
One pause.
One better choice.
One small shift.
Again and again.
2-Minute Reflection from Pam
Suggested reflection:
This conversation made me realize something.
Whether you're raising children, leading a team, caring for aging parents, or simply trying to navigate life...
We all have moments when we react in ways that don't reflect who we truly are.
Our first instinct is usually to ask,
"What's wrong with me?"
But what if we replaced that question with,
"What happened to me?"
Or even,
"What do I need right now?"
Those questions don't remove responsibility.
They create understanding.
And understanding is where real change begins.
The pause isn't about pretending everything is okay.
It's about creating just enough space to choose a different next step.
That's how patterns begin to change.
Before You Go...
One thing Michelle said has stayed with me:
"You're not alone, and it's never too late."
Whether you're a parent or not, I hope you'll carry those words with you this week.
Because every one of us is still becoming.
And none of us has to do it perfectly.
Thank you for being part of this community.
I'm grateful you're here.
Until Thursday,
Pam
