Behind the Mic | Elaine Starling: The Pause Before the Storm
Sometimes the best conversation begins after the microphones are turned off.
Where the Conversation Continues
Every Thursday, I invite you into a conversation.
But what you don't hear...is what stays with me after we stop recording.
Sometimes it's a question.
Sometimes it's a story.
Sometimes it's one small insight that quietly follows me throughout the day.
That's why I created Behind the Mic.
Each Wednesday, I'll share one reflection from that week's conversation before the episode goes live.
Think of it as pulling up another chair after everyone else has gone home.
I'm glad you're here.

The Person You're Becoming
I intentionally paired this week's conversation with Tuesday's story, Don't Freak Out, because together they reveal something I've been learning for years.
On the surface...one is about a flooded road.
The other is about alignment, awareness, and noticing your breath.
They don't seem connected. Until you realize they aren't really about the circumstances at all. They're about the person we become before the circumstances ever arrive.
During my conversation with Elaine, she said something so simple it would've been easy to overlook.
"Notice your breath."
The more I reflected on those words...
The more I realized they explained something I hadn't noticed about my own story.
When I received those pictures of Kyle and the boys sitting on the roof of that truck...
I was just as scared as any mother would be. But I wasn't the same person I would've been ten years ago.
Healing hadn't removed my fear.
It had changed my response.
That's what stayed with me after talking with Elaine. We spend so much of life hoping we'll know what to do when the hard moments come.
But maybe...the real work happens long before those moments ever arrive.
Every time we pause.
Every time we choose awareness instead of autopilot.
Every time we interrupt an old pattern instead of repeating it.
We're becoming someone.
Then one day...
Life hands us a moment we never would've chosen.
And we discover that all those small, quiet choices have been preparing us all along.
A Question for You
Looking back over your own life...can you think of a moment when you responded differently than the person you used to be?
Maybe that's what healing looks like.
Not becoming someone else...but becoming more fully yourself.
I'd love to hear your answer.

I really do read every one.
Why We Keep Repeating Unhealthy Patterns | Elaine Starling
This week Elaine and I talk about:
Why so many of our reactions begin before we're even aware of them
The surprising power of simply noticing your breath
How alignment helps us respond instead of react
Why receiving can be just as important as giving
How returning to yourself changes the way you show up for the people you love
Until next time...
Thank you for pulling up a chair.
This also marks the final conversation in our Return series.
Over the past several weeks, we've explored what it means to come back to ourselves, one story, one conversation, and one pause at a time.
Next week...
We begin a brand-new chapter.
I can't wait to share it with you.
With gratitude,
Pam
