Behind the Mic with Pam | Why Most Podcasts Lose Listeners in 15 Seconds
If your podcast isn’t growing, the problem might not be your content, it might be how you start.

Behind the Mic with Pam 🎙️ (Bonus Edition)
I learned something this week for my own podcast and wanted to share this for anyone with a podcast or considering one. Enjoy!
You can spend hours recording the perfect episode…
and still lose your listener in the first 15 seconds.
Not because the content isn’t good…
But because those first moments don’t earn attention.
And if you don’t earn attention,
you don’t earn the next minute.
I didn’t fully understand this until I started working behind the scenes, editing, producing, and optimizing podcast episodes.
I began noticing a pattern.
Some episodes felt strong…
But when you listened closely, they started like this:
“Hey guys… welcome back… today we’re going to talk about…”
And right there,
before the value even begins,
the listener is already deciding whether to stay or go.
The Problem
Most podcast intros are:
• Too slow
• Too vague
• Too focused on the host instead of the listener
And today’s listener?
They’re distracted. Busy. Already half out the door. They’re deciding if you’re worth their time… before you even begin.
The Shift
Instead of easing into your episode…
Start with a pattern interrupt.
Something that makes the listener think:
“I need to hear this.”
Example
Instead of:
“Welcome back to the show…”
Try:
“Hey guys, welcome back to another episode…”
Why This Works
Your brain is wired to scan for:
• relevance
• urgency
• value
If those aren’t clear immediately…
It moves on.
Behind The Mic Insight
When I edit episodes, I’m not just cleaning audio…
I’m listening for:
• where attention drops
• where energy shifts
• where the message gets lost
Because small changes, just a few seconds,
can completely change how an episode performs.
The Plus One Move
Don’t overhaul your entire podcast.
Just ask:
What’s one stronger way I could start this episode?
That’s your Plus One.
If you're building a podcast, or thinking about starting one, this is just one of the ways I help shows grow behind the scenes.
And if you don’t have the time (or desire) to figure all of this out alone…I’d be honored to help.
Inside the Pause
Have you ever noticed how quickly you decide to keep listening… or move on?
That moment, the split second where you choose,
is the same moment that shows up in so many areas of your life.
Reflection
Where in your life are you deciding before you’re even aware of it?
Gentle Reminder
You don’t need to fix everything.
Just pause long enough to notice… before the pattern decides for you.
I’m turning this into a short series, because this isn’t just one fix.
It’s a pattern.
Part 1: Why listeners leave in the first 15 seconds (you’re here)
Part 2: Why your podcast isn’t getting found
Part 3: Where attention drops mid-episode
Part 4: The small shifts that change everything
Because real growth doesn’t come from overhauling everything…
it comes from small, intentional changes.
Next, we’re shifting from keeping attention…
to getting found in the first place.
Because even the best podcast won’t grow if no one ever discovers it.
I’ll break down the difference between how people find you on Google…and how platforms are starting to surface content in a completely different way.
This is the kind of shift that only takes a few seconds…
but can completely change how your podcast performs.
If you're building a podcast, or wondering why it's not growing, this is exactly the kind of thing I help fix behind the scenes.
Sometimes it's not your content…it's just how it starts.
If you want a second set of ears on your episodes,
I’d love to take a look!
